The gap between learning to code and shipping something

Most high school technology coursework ends with a theoretical generic project. A student follows the steps, the steps work, and the project goes in a folder. Nothing gets used by anyone. Nothing gets tested against a person who did not write it.

That gap is where the actual skill lives.

On August 26, juniors and seniors in Jackson R-2's IGNITE CAPS business pathway started a Business Solutions course built with Codefi, and the course is designed specifically to close it. Over the term, associates — IGNITE's term for its students — will design, build, and deploy working software applications. Some will be built for local businesses with a specific operational problem. Some will be tools associates build to solve something in their own daily process.

Either way, the output is software that runs.


What changed to make this possible

Two years ago, this course would not have been realistic at the high school level. Building a functional, deployed application meant months of syntax, framework decisions, and debugging before a student produced anything a business could actually open and use.

AI coding tools moved that line. The build is no longer the bottleneck. Defining the problem is.

That is a more useful thing to teach anyway. An associate who can sit across from a business owner, ask what actually breaks on Tuesday mornings, translate the answer into a clear specification, and then direct AI tools to build against it has learned something durable. The tools will be replaced. The method will not.


Three skills the course produces

Precise problem definition. AI tools do exactly what you describe. Vague input produces useless output. Associates learn to interrogate a problem until it is specific enough to build against — which is the same skill that makes a good analyst, product manager, or founder.

Delivery under real feedback. A business owner will say the thing does not do what they needed. Associates will revise. That loop — deliver, hear the gap, revise, deliver again — is what separates people who finish projects from people who start them.

Verifiable evidence. An associate finishing this course can point at a deployed application and name the business using it. That is stronger than a transcript line. An employer can open it.


What Jackson R-2 built to make room for it

IGNITE is Jackson R-2's profession-based learning program at Jackson High School, part of the national Center for Advanced Professional Studies network. It launched in the 2025-26 school year, placing selected juniors and seniors into industry-specific coursework and real projects across multiple career pathways. Jackson R-2 partners with Southeast Missouri State University to offer college credit through the program, and associates earn Market Value Assets — credentials and experience employers recognize.

The Business Solutions course sits inside the business pathway. Codefi delivers the build methodology and instruction; the district delivers the structure and the local employer relationships that make client work possible.

This is what a career pathway looks like when a school district builds it with the businesses that will eventually hire from it.


Cape Girardeau County businesses: submit a problem

The course needs real problems. If your business has a recurring operational drag — a manual process someone does by hand every week, a spreadsheet that has outgrown what a spreadsheet should do, intake or scheduling friction, reporting that eats hours — that is a candidate.

What participating businesses provide:

Why this matters past Jackson

Southeast Missouri does not have a talent shortage. It has a proof shortage. Employers cannot always see the capability that already exists here, and students cannot always demonstrate it before they leave for somewhere that will.

A 17-year-old in Jackson who has deployed working software for a local employer is proof, and it is local, and it is verifiable.
